About Hess Construction
Jeffrey Hess started in construction forty years ago because he couldn't stand watching contractors cut corners. He was young, frustrated, and convinced there had to be a better way—one where you actually called people back, showed up on time, and didn't charge someone triple because they didn't know better. That belief never left him. It became the backbone of everything.
Those early years took him from the Midwest to the East Coast, working whatever jobs came—residential driveways, small commercial lots, grading work that other crews turned down. The projects changed, but the principle stayed the same: do work you can be proud of, or don't do it at all. Over time, that focus became a company. Land clearing, excavation, drainage solutions, site work, pond construction, hauling. Residential, commercial, municipal. The services grew because clients trusted what they had, and they asked for more.
Transparency isn't a sales tactic. We learned early that people fear what they don't understand. A municipal project manager doesn't want promises. She wants to know exactly what's happening, when, and why. A homeowner doesn't need to be impressed—he needs to know his driveway won't crack in two years. We explain what we see. We tell you what it will cost before we start. We call when plans change. Not because it's good business, but because it's the only way to work.
Reliability is a habit. We keep our word because the alternative—making excuses, rescheduling, disappearing—costs people money and peace of mind. When a drainage problem floods a client's basement, the only response that matters is getting there and fixing it. Not tomorrow. Not after the paperwork. We've built the company to move fast because sometimes speed is the whole point.
Versatility comes from listening. Residential work taught us precision. Commercial projects taught us logistics. Municipal jobs taught us regulation and patience. Each type brought different problems, and solving them made us better at the ones that came next. A site that needs both excavation and drainage isn't a hassle—it's a chance to control the whole outcome instead of handing it off to someone else and hoping they understand what you were trying to do.
'I've never had to wonder if the job was going to get done right, or if I'd get an honest answer about what it costs. That changes everything.'

When you call, you get someone who understands the work. We walk the site with you or your team. We ask questions until we know what success looks like. We give you a clear scope, a realistic timeline, and what it will cost. Then we show up and do it. You'll see the crew on schedule. You'll get updates before problems become disasters. When it's done, it's done right—not rushed, not cut, not hoping it holds.
This is how we've built a business that's lasted four decades. Not through marketing. Not through the cheapest bid. Through people who needed work done and decided to give us a chance. Then they told someone else. Then they called again. If that sounds like how you want to work, reach out. We'll tell you what we can do, what it costs, and when we can start.
